REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Scott Peterson told his mistress days after the disappearance of his wife, whom he is charged with murdering, that his favorite movie was a gory 1980 motion picture in which a husband unsuccessfully plots to kill his wife.
Peterson made the remarks during a January 2003 telephone conversation with Amber Frey, who recorded the call at the request of police and is the prosecution's star witness in Peterson's murder trial.

"Beggar," "homeless person," and "welfare bum" were among the offensive entries. Not a good week for Muslims.

Bawer presents evidences during the time when some people talked about The New Yorker, as if it were nothing less than the Platonic ideal of a magazine, a holy object beyond criticism of mere mortals. During its heyday, if charitable, is a pretty description of a typical story by writer John Cheever, who between 1935 and 1981 appeared in the magazine seem intended to revive a reputation that peaked with the 1978 publication of the omnibus Stories of John Cheever which has been in decline ever since his death four years later. His association with the New Yorker was a major source of self-esteem reflected in an incident which took place in the sixties.
