Ladish Co. would benefit from an end to the strike that has idled Boeing Co. aircraft factories and further delayed production of Boeing's highly anticipated Dreamliner 787 passenger jets. Cudahy-based Ladish makes titanium components for the airline and aerospace industries. It recently installed the world's largest isothermal press to produce aircraft engine parts for companies such as Rolls-Royce and General Electric Co.

Ladish Co. Cudahy-based Ladish, which makes metal parts for the jet engine, aerospace and general industrial markets, saw a decline in demand in the majority of its markets, said Kerry Woody, president and CEO. The company expected markets to remain challenging throughout 2009 as the world economy works its way through the recession, Woody said. Ladish shares closed at $8.83, down 31 cents, before results were released.

Ladish Co. will lay off about 70 production workers at its Cudahy factory, probably within the next two weeks. The maker of forged and cast-metal parts for the jet engine, aerospace and general industrial markets has seen demand erode with the recession. Wayne E. Larsen, vice president for law and finance, said Friday that Ladish has already taken other steps, including a one-week furlough without pay for everyone, earlier this year.

When Turbocam, a supplier of turbo machinery parts for ground and aerospace transportation applications, was tasked with producing a diesel engine turbocharger impeller for a customer, it installed a new production cell. Each cell consists of two five-axis Chiron FZO8KSM machining centers each fitted with a Siemens SINUMERIK 8400 CNC control from Siemens Automation, Machine Tool Business, an ABB material-handling robot and a 250-unit workpiece carrousel. We are superseding an existing airworthiness directive (AD) for all RR RB211-Trent 800 series turbofan engines. That AD currently requires removal from service of certain critical engine parts based on reduced life limits. This new AD reduces the life limits of additional critical engine parts. This AD was prompted by RR reducing the life limits of additional critical engine parts. We are issuing this AD to prevent the failure of critical rotating parts, which could result in uncontained failure of the engine and damage to the airplane.
