DAYTON -- Serious assaults at downtown and Oregon District bars have fallen by 50 percent in a year following a bar training program, saving society an estimated $2.1 million, according to advocates of the program. While the rest of the economy has faltered, the number of downtown bars, clubs and nightspots has grown from 61 in 2008 to 80 this year. The number of aggravated assaults, however, has decreased.

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana lawmakers snuffed out a statewide public smoking ban Wednesday after the American Cancer Society and other advocates said it included too many . The Senate Public Policy Committee voted 8-1 against the measure, which would have banned smoking in most workplaces, including restaurants, but would not have applied to bars, casinos, nursing homes, fraternal clubs and smoke shops.
