In a case that prosecutors conceded had some troubling evidence to suggest a crime might have occurred, an inquest jury on Friday followed a long tradition and recommended that a Milwaukee police officer be cleared in the off-duty shooting death of 25-year-old William Javier Prado, killed by eight bullets from behind in a south side alley in March.
The jury's unanimous but advisory verdict found that Alfonzo Glover, 34, who shot 19 times at the unarmed Prado after an extended traffic encounter and brief foot chase, was justified in his actions because of his right to self-defense, his right to use force in the course of an arrest, or a combination of both privileges.

CHEYENNE -- A U.S. District Court jury's verdict here likely played a role in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's decision to issue a public health advisory last month on the use of antidepressants by adults and children.
The agency is asking manufacturers to change the labels of 10 drugs, including Paxil, to display stronger warnings about the need to monitor patients for worsening depression and suicidal thinking.

The issue of jurors using the Internet continues to pop up all over the country. I personally had to deal with it in the State v. Dixon case, where jurors were alleged to have been communicating about the case on Facebook during the trial. I can't discuss that case at this writing, but note that ideas and proposals continue to blossom for dealing with the juror who is used to putting his ideas and thoughts out to the world instantaneously and receiving unfiltered information from his electronic devices.
For example, Wisconsin has adopted a new advisory jury instruction which reads:

After deliberating less than an hour, an inquest jury Thursday found that a Milwaukee police officer acted in self-defense when he fatally shot an unarmed man in the back Jan. 11.
Officer Richard Hoffman, 24, testified Wednesday that he shot Joseph Evans, 40, because Evans reached for the officer's gun while they scuffled in an alley in the 3400 block of N. 24th St. Hoffman said he feared Evans would get the gun and kill him and his partner.
