Public opinion of the US presidency in the 1990s rests on three influential forces: the message delivered in educational textbooks in the 1950s and 1960s, the transformation of a president into a larger-than-life figure via televised images, and fiction published from the 1950s to the 1970s. The impact of such books as "Fail-Safe," by Eugene Burdick and John Wheeler and the "Advice and Consent" series by Allen Drury have yet to be fully understood. They presented images of presidents who were fallible, but in whom the public placed total trust.
