GM's plan calls for a series of aggressive cost-cutting measures, including slashing salaried worker costs by 20 percent by cutting jobs and retiree health care benefits to save or raise about $15 billion. GM also says it will cut marketing and advertising budgets and capital expenditures. In addition, the automaker will sell more assets. GM is already exploring the sale of Hummer, and some other brands owned by the automaker are being considered for potential sale.
Some analysts have said the automaker will even need to reevaluate spending on events like Detroit's GM River Days, GM Style held in the city in conjunction with the North American International Auto Show, and other endeavors. Family businesses are taking unique, sometimes drastic measures to keep the dream alive.
The family firm rolls with the same economic tide as everyone else. But when fiscal waters roil, the risk may be greatest for mom, pop and especially the kids, who might've banked on a sinking ship. "Now they have to go out and develop new skills and get other jobs," noted Garden City attorney Ellen Victor. "They didn't just lose a job. They've lost their livelihood.

If today's media landscape had a theme song, it might well be REM's Everybody Hurts. Professional advertising continues its long downward trend, but suddenly, medical publishers have plenty of company. As patent cliffs approach and the FDA takes a more skeptical approach on drug safety and approvals, marketers are under pressure to cut costs. Over the last few years, as more companies embrace multichannel marketing, promotional budget shifts are noted as more is getting invested into digital. Those companies that are traditionally supporters of journal advertising are not necessarily cutting these budgets to accommodate this shift. Both publishers and agencies alike are challenged with broadening their capabilities and offering a wide array of media options that reach healthcare practit...
