Melba Pearce, a 63-year-old basketball junkie from Bartlett who claims to have been a bracketologist "before anyone even knew what that was," sniffed out a rack of baseball hats at Love's Travel Stop off Interstate-40 in Galloway, Ark., one recent weekday morning. She proceeded to grab all the Tennessee ones she could find. And with a quick, surreptitious glance toward the front of the store, she stuffed them behind a bunch of less offensive caps on the bottom shelf.
According to her friends, many of whom had joined her before dawn at a parking lot near the University of Memphis, Pearce plays this game of hide-and-seek at random truck stops in the Mid-South and at many regional sporting goods stores. All about youth: Jerry Thompson, store manager at the Sportsman's Warehouse in Southaven, reports that the store's Outdoor Adventure Team, which recently capped a summer of activities, was a huge success. "The kids really enjoyed all of the seminars and learned a lot about the outdoors," Thompson said. "The parents even commented about learning new things." Thompson said the purpose of store's Outdoor Adventure Team wa...

-- Infielder Brandon Wood, picked up off waivers Friday, made his Pirates debut last night playing third base. "It's a new adventure, new team, new clubhouse, everything's new, so I'm happy to just get out there and play," Wood said before the game. Manager Clint Hurdle's advice to Wood was to not go out of his way to make a good first impression, and to try to go out and play like he's in the backyard. "If I hit three home runs or have four strikeouts, it doesn't show my worth on the team," Wood said. "It's just one baseball game, and that's the way I have to treat it.
-- One reason for putting Wood in the game at third base instead of shortstop was Pedro Alvarez's .214 batting average against left- handers (3 for 14). "Pedro's showing some progress, but it hasn't been against left-ha...
