SAN DIEGO, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a non-profit college readiness system, reported a record 22,210 seniors participated in AVID's annual data collection giving details about their demographics and academic achievements. Of the 2010 AVID seniors reporting their information, 99.6 percent graduated from high school with 91 percent planning to attend a postsecondary institution - 58 percent to four- year institutions and 33 percent to two-year institutions.
Additionally, 74 percent of the seniors reported taking at least one AP or IB course, with 61 percent taking the corresponding exam. Results also show that 2010 AVID seniors completed four-year college entrance requirements at a rate more than two times their peers. AVID seniors...

Roger Lettie of the Maryland Higher Education Commission will speak at "How to Pay for College", a seminar which will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Glen Burnie High School auditorium, 7550 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd.
The event is sponsored by the GBHS guidance department and the Advancement Via Individual Determination programs at GBHS and Marley and Corkran middle schools.

The capacity crowd in Capital High School's library cheered when people heard Thursday afternoon that the school was designated an AVID Demonstration School. Capital is the only school in the state with such a designation.
AVID -- Advancement Via Individual Determination -- is a nationwide college preparatory program that encourages students to achieve through a series of elective and content-area classes focusing on writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading. There are roughly 4,500 AVID schools in 45 states, but only 117 of them are considered demonstration schools, designed to set an example for how the program works.
