Fluent in five languages French, English, Italian, Spanish and Haitian Creole Michaëlle Jean is the first black Governor General of Canada. As Governor General, she holds reserve powers which are constitutional conventions, although these are not spelled out in the constitution. The governor general typically exercises these powers, such as summoning Parliament, on ministerial advice, but retains special authority in exceptional circumstances, when she may appoint or dismiss a prime minister or dissolve Parliament. She is entitled to be styled Her Excellency while in office, and The Right Honourable for life; given current practice, she will be sworn in to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada after her term as the Queen's representative has ended.
