When Alan Krutchkoff, founder of the Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon, headed off to Afghanistan last month, his organization was serving a little more than 10,000 "adoptees" in the U.S. military.
By the time he returned on Nov. 4, that number had nearly doubled.

If there's one thing we know, it's that the civic-minded citizens of Colorado Springs need no nudging from us in order to get behind a worthy philanthropy or reach out to assist those in need. They are exceedingly generous with their charitable donations and volunteer time. Still, occasionally a cause comes along that deserves special mention. And readers who missed Friday's Gazette need to know about this one -- a new nonprofit called the Citizen Soldier Connection.
This community already has a warm, welcoming and respectful relationship with the U.S. armed forces, given the number of military facilities in our midst and the large population of active and retired military personnel calling Colorado Springs home. But those already-strong ties could even be closer, which is why we welcom...

I am astounded at the article [on Jeff Sharlet's book, "C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy," Oct. 10], re the international fellowship, which is not a secret organization and not a political group. The man who wrote the book is short on knowledge.

Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon will host a spaghetti dinner Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fair Lawn American Legion, 1708 River Road. Tickets are $6 for children and $10 for adults. For information, visit adoptasoldierplatoon.org.

NORMAL - Students came face to face with three members of the military - like the ones they write letters to, collect items for and care about - on Thursday at Colene Hoose Elementary School.
It was part of the annual State Farm Military Affinity Group's Adopt-A-Soldier event at the school. It gave students the chance to thank servicemen and women, learn more about what they do and donate things they have collected.

PORTLAND - The Marshall Tucker Band, known for such hit singles as "Heard It In a Love Song and "Take The Highway," will perform in concert Sunday, Oct. 11, at Hadlock Field - with proceeds benefiting U.S. troops and veterans.
Specifically helped by the fundraiser, hosted by the Falmouth Rotary, will be Operation HomeFront, Warrior Legacy, Adopt a US Soldier and Home for Our Troops.

The wind snapped the large United States flag and bit anyone who dared step from his car to view the simple white headstones that stand at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
On Tuesday, Stephan Geurts, 34, who traveled all the way from the Netherlands, dared. So did his girlfriend, Resi Pelen, 37, who is also from the Netherlands.
