Not a day goes by in our household that a sport isn't played or watched. Whether we're watching the Super Bowl or March Madness, a Little League game or youth football game, professionals or hometown heroes, we are constantly cheering on our favorite athletes. While my children enjoy cheering on the pros, I much prefer cheering on my children. There are numerous lifelong benefits to youth participation in sports. First and foremost, youth sports promote good health and physical fitness. Participation in recreational youth sports provides the exercise needed to burn calories that help fight childhood obesity and also releases endorphins needed to combat adolescent depression.

Previous research has documented an association between adolescent community violence exposure (CVE) and poor psychological functioning. The purpose of this study is to delineate the relations of CVE, parental mental health, and adolescent PTSD and depression. Participants consisted of 121 pairs of junior high and high school students and their parents. Adolescents completed measures to assess their history of violence exposure and current psychological functioning. Parents completed a demographic questionnaire and measures assessing their psychological functioning. An educational forum on youth suicide will be offered from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 17 at Most Holy Trinity Parish Hall. The event will include a showing of the film "A Secret Best Not Kept," followed by a response panel, who will share their experiences, including Dr. Patrick Maidman, medical director of Counseling Services Inc.; Carrie Horne, NAMI-ME's Teen Screen coordinator; a student who experienced adolescent depression; a parent whose child has experienced adolescent depression; Dr. Michael Arenstam, president DBSA Aces Support Group; and a school nurse.

Depressive disorders, which include major depressive disorder (unipolar depression), dysthymic disorder (chronic, mild depression), and bipolar disorder (manic-depression), can have far reaching effects on the functioning and adjustment of young people.
