THE MOVIE "Atlas Shrugged," adapted from Ayn Rand's 1957 novel by the same name, is a triumph of cinematic irony. A work that lectures us endlessly on the moral superiority of heroic achievement is itself a model of mediocrity. In this, the film perfectly reflects both the novel and the mind behind it.
Rand is something of a cultural phenomenon - the author of potboilers who became an ethical and political philosopher, a libertarian heroine. But Rand's distinctive mix of expressive egotism, free love and free-market metallurgy does not hold up very well on the screen. The emotional center of the movie is the success of high-speed rail - oddly similar to a proposal in Barack Obama's last State of the Union address. All of the characters are ideological puppets. Visionary, comely capitali...

The administration of juvenile justice should incorporate rehabilitative and retributive dimensions. Young offenders pass through the juvenile system during the time they are forming lifelong habits they will carry into adulthood. In contrast to current reform debate about abolishing the juvenile system or making it more like the adult criminal system, the juvenile system should develop effective rehabilitative programs along with retributive programs.

A few years ago, baby boomers needed 3-D glasses to take in the gorgeous vision of their decades to come. Books and articles foresaw baby boomers skipping off into a "Second Adolescence" of self-fulfillment. No longer chained to the 9-to-5 and still healthy, the newly "retired" would follow their muse. The future was theirs, despite all that gray hair (or gray roots).
Certain economic realities have since intervened, forcing boomers to hang onto their old jobs with all 20 fingers. House prices collapsed, taking away their home-equity bag of gold. Their IRAs and 401(k)s may be moth-eaten by bad investment decisions, such as selling stocks after the crash and not holding on for the recovery. Meanwhile, their "safe" savings vehicles deliver about zero interest. And Medicare and S...

This study examines the growth of alcohol and marijuana use during early adolescence among a sample of 746 Indigenous youth (aged 10 - 12 years at wave 1; 50.3% female) of the upper Midwest and Canada, with a special focus on potential gender differences in these patterns. Research documenting the disproportionately high rates of Indigenous substance use, coupled by our lack of understanding of gender patterns among this group-especially in very early adolescence-highlight the need for this culturally specific work. Results of latent growth curve analyses from three waves of annual data collection indicate that the females in our sample engage in alcohol and marijuana use at rates similar to or greater than their male peers. This finding counters conventional ideas of gender and substan...

You can think of "Planet 51," a PG-rated animated feature film, as sort of "E.T." in reverse. That is because the alien invader is NASA astronaut Charles "Chuck" Baker (voiced by wrestler-turned- actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), who lands on Planet 51 only to find it is inhabited by tiny green creatures who live in fear of being invaded by alien creatures just like Chuck. "Planet 51" will get a free screening at 2 p.m. today in Marvin Auditorium at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th, as this week's Friday Flick offering.

Late adolescence (i.e., the age-group between 16 and 20 years) is characterized by significant changes in neurological and cognitive processes, behavioral and social functioning, and relational and physical contexts as the individual moves toward adulthood. In this age-group, major role transitions affect almost every aspect of life. Moreover, brain development continues-and with it the development of cognitive functions, working memory, emotional and behavioral self-regulation, and decisionmaking. The adolescent's social and emotional development also continues to evolve, affecting interactions with parents, siblings, peers, and first romantic relationships. All of these changes impact drinking behavior during late adolescence, and, in fact, alcohol use, binge drinking, and heavy drink...
