BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A suicide bomber detonated a truck packed with explosives outside a Baghdad police station Sunday, killing at least 39 people in the country's deadliest attack in a week. Separate attacks killed a U.S. soldier and a Marine, the U.S. military said.
The attack on the Rashad police station in the eastern neighborhood of Mashtal came during a blinding sandstorm. Security barricades prevented the bomber from reaching the station, but the huge blast destroyed two dozen cars and damaged nearby shops.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- More Sunni Muslim Arabs will be appointed to join elected lawmakers in drafting Iraq's new constitution, President Jalal Talabani said Thursday, a day after the Sunnis threatened to boycott the process.
Meanwhile, 19 security guards for a North Carolina-based company were detained for three days in a military jail by U.S. Marines following an alleged shooting spree May 28, and some of the contractors complained they were abused while in custody.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraq's president averted a crisis Thursday by promising Sunni Arabs a big say in drafting the constitution - clearing the way for them to join a Shiite-dominated panel now working around the clock in a cavernous, dusty auditorium.
Sunni Arab support is vital to the lawmakers who gather inside the most heavily fortified area of the capital, trying to ignore assassination attempts, death threats and suicide attacks as they wrangle over sensitive charter details and sometimes give way to shouted arguments.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Shiite mourners were crying for blood, threatening to burn down a Sunni town where dozens of Shiite travelers had been slain. Their rage boiled over after a fresh spate of bombings killed nearly 40 people in Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad.
A senior Shiite politician, Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, appealed for calm, telling the 2,000-strong crowd that Sunnis and Shiites must live in peace together. Yet he had sent a very different message just two days before, suggesting Shiites set up vigilante groups to track down "terrorists" in the Sunni-led insurgency and report them to security authorities, which are dominated by Shiites.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Bombing and shooting attacks west of Baghdad killed six U.S. troops, and a suicide car bomber slammed into a truck carrying Iraqi policemen near the airport Thursday, killing at least eight and wounding 25 -- the latest wave of violence aimed at derailing Iraq's advancing political process.
The attacks came as Shiite politicians completed efforts to include the disaffected Sunni Arab minority in the work of drafting Iraq's new constitution. Senior members of the Shiite-dominated committee writing the charter reached agreement with the Sunnis on how many representatives the minority will have on the body.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A senior Shiite cleric said Wednesday that Iraq's government has opened indirect communications with factions in the Sunni Arab-dominated insurgency and is trying to persuade them to lay down their arms and return to Iraq's political fold.
