  • This study addresses a campus institutional effectiveness (IE) process and its influence on faculty and staff. Although a comprehensive, rational IE process appeals to campus leaders, this study found that it creates significant faculty and staff challenges. Campus leaders, faculty, and staff differ in their (a) knowledge and support of IE; (b) participation in IE process activities; and (c) perceptions of IE strengths, weaknesses, and usefulness. Needed IE data are typically available to campus stakeholders except for student learning outcomes data across all academic programs. Administrators, faculty, and staff agree that a lack of time is the major IE impediment. IE expectations may be too challenging for campus participants, and faculty and staff need more institutional support to a...

  • Numerous facilitative procedures have been developed and used by facilitators to assist groups with solving problems and making decisions. Working with a new student services work group at a university in Denver, Colorado, USA, I employed the devil's advocacy approach, which programs conflict into a problem-solving procedure through alternate recommendations and critiques of possible solutions by two subgroups. Use of the procedure helped group members to develop a deeper understanding of an important problem-motivating the academic administration and faculty to set and publish accurate course rotations in a timely fashion-and to articulate a series of actions to solve it. This facilitation case study revealed several enabling and inhibitive facilitator behaviors that further the unders...

  • To avoid extinctions and other harms to ecological health from escalating climatic change, scientists, resource managers, and activists are considering and even engaging in "assisted migration" -- the intentional movement of an organism to an area in which its species has never existed. This article explores the profound implications of climate change for American natural resource management through the lens of this controversial adaptation strategy. It details arguments regarding the scientific viability and legality of assisted migration under the thicket of laws that govern natural resources in the US. The article explains why contemporary natural resource law's fidelity to historic baselines, protecting preexisting biota, and shielding nature from human activity is increasingly unte...
