Legislators in Annapolis have apparently rejected the idea of conferring immunity on court-appointed attorneys for physically and sexually abused children who carelessly, negligently or incompetently represent their child clients. That is great news for abused children. As the most vulnerable clients in the system, children need and deserve accountable attorneys who are held to the highest standards of professional conduct. Proponents of immunity - primarily lawyers who stand to benefit personally - have advanced new bill language designed to hoodwink legislators into indirectly granting immunity through the courts. Worse, the immunity conferred by the new bill language would be even stronger than the immunity tha...

Courts deal in winners and losers and are often ill-equipped to resolve issues involving warring siblings contesting the guardianship of their ailing or disabled parents. Proponents of guardianship mediation say it offers an alternative that allows the siblings to vent what may be decades-long grievances and decide among themselves how the issues should be handled.

In the latest fallout from the fight in Washington over how to trim the federal budget, payments to private attorneys who represent indigent criminal defendants in federal court have been suspended. This is very troubling, and I'm very concerned it's going to have an impact on the criminal justice system and the quality of defense work in this district," Maryland Federal Public Defender James Wyda said Thursday, shortly after he passed the news from the Administrative Office of the United States Courts to the more than 100 attorneys on the state's Criminal Justice Act panel.
