JEFFERSON CITY -- Although some other states are reining in the interest rates charged by payday loan companies, the movement is not taking hold in the Missouri legislature.
Legislation to cap interest rates is languishing as the session moves toward its May 14 adjournment date. Although Gov. Jay Nixon used his State of the State speech Jan. 20 to call the industry a "voracious predator" for charging people 400 percent annual interest, little has happened since.

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - A $55 billion state budget, proposals for new programs and new taxes, demands for more money - all of it comes down to three Chicago Democrats negotiating behind closed doors.
But Gov. Rod Blagojevich's budget talks with House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President Emil Jones do not seem to be going smoothly. The Legislature's April 7 adjournment date came and went without any agreement.

RICHMOND -- Jan. 13, 2010 marked more than just the 13th day of a brand new decade. It was the genesis of a new General Assembly session at the state Capital in downtown Richmond. This session is scheduled to run for 60 days and the expected date for adjournment is Saturday, March 13.
