NORMAL - As college students try to balance freedom with responsibilities, their health frequently gets shoved aside.
Exercise, healthy eating and adequate sleep are seldom priorities as students cram classes, studying, extracurricular activities and work into their schedules while also enjoying their new freedom with a busy social life.

More and more scientific studies confirm that sufficient sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy body and a sound mind, but that most adults do not get enough. The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) is, therefore, alerting New Yorkers to some of the consequences of sleep deprivation and also sharing recommendations on how to get more sleep. What might be most effective in convincing New Yorkers to get more sleep is a new study corroborating a previous one that found a strong correlation between inadequate sleep and weight gain. Of the 68,000 women who participated in the famous Nurses Health Study, those who got five hours or less of sleep a night were 32 percent more likely to gain 33 pounds or more over a 16-year period than those who slept seven hours or more. Even...

TROY -- The Upper Valley Medical Center advises those worried about catching colds and the flu that getting adequate sleep is key in maintaining health and warding off illness.
Studies show that sleep deprivation has an adverse effect on immune function, and chronic sleep loss can increase an individual's vulnerability to infectious diseases," according to the National Sleep Foundation.

Value Your Education - At the Mays Academy, every day I ask my young men, "Why are you here?" and they respond in unison, "To learn, sir!" "Why do we learn?" I say, and they answer, "Because knowledge is power!" Make education a priority. Attendance is critical, homework is important, adequate sleep is vital, and praise for academic achievements inspires pride. Dropping out of school is like dropping out of life! Don't do it.
Be Smart about Your Loyalties - A worthy friend is a person's most valuable companion. But a young man needs to be smart about choosing his "boys." Give your loyalty to someone who is living without purpose, without a firm identity as a child of God, and without respect for authority and other people, and you may be giving away your future. Boys have to be smart ab...

FMCSA revises the hours of service (HOS) regulations to limit the use of the 34-hour restart provision to once every 168 hours and to require that anyone using the 34-hour restart provision have as part of the restart two periods that include 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. It also includes a provision that allows truckers to drive if they have had a break of at least 30 minutes, at a time of their choosing, sometime within the previous 8 hours. This rule does not include a change to the daily driving limit because the Agency is unable to definitively demonstrate that a 10-hour limit--which it favored in the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM)--would have higher net benefits than an 11-hour limit. The current 11-hour limit is therefore unchanged at this time. The 60- and 70-hour limits are also uncha...

Good health is essential to happiness. So said Thomas Jefferson in 1787, in a letter urging the virtues of exercise. Good eating habits, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are key ingredients to improving our health, but there are many times when we must see a doctor. Children need vaccinations and regular checkups, pregnant mothers need prenatal care, and men and women of all ages need regular testing to ensure a healthy life. And when disease or accidents strike, specialized medical care can make the difference in who lives and who does not. Too many Americans, more than 40 million, do not have health coverage, leaving them vulnerable and leaving society worse off.
We all lose. We all pay. Many public and private hospitals, especially their emergency rooms, provide services to the u...

SEATTLE - This city's school district decided in 2000 that because the son of Jill Kurfirst and the daughter of Winnie Bachwitz are white, they should be assigned to an inferior and distant high school.
If they had not left the Seattle school system, this would have required them to rise at 5 a.m. in order to leave home by 5:30 a.m., alone and in the dark, to take the first of three buses, returning home between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., with almost no time left for homework, family activities and adequate sleep.

THE QUESTION: Some believe the widespread tenderness and pain of fibromyalgia makes sleep difficult; others think the lack of adequate sleep accentuates the disorder's symptoms. Almost everyone agrees, however, that insomnia is a common complaint of people with fibromyalgia. Might behavioral therapy help?
THIS STUDY randomly divided 47 adults with fibromyalgia and chronic insomnia, nearly all of them women, into three groups. Two received individual, weekly therapy sessions: either cognitive behavior therapy (talk therapy focused on sleep habits as well as attitudes about sleep needs) or therapy aimed at educating people about the science of sleep; the third received normal care for fibromyalgia, with an added weekly meeting to record sleep data. After six weeks, information from sleep ...
