BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The leading Shiite candidate to become Iraq's next prime minister welcomed Saturday overtures by groups that boycotted national elections last week and declared that he and others were willing to offer "the maximum" to bring those largely Sunni Arab groups into the drafting of the constitution and participation in the coming government. But Adel Abdel-Mehdi, the current finance minister and a powerful figure in the coalition expected to dominate Iraq's parliament, rejected a key demand of those groups -- a timetable for a withdrawal of the 150,000 U.S. troops in the country.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The battle for Iraq's Shiite-populated south that engaged U.S. forces again Saturday is presenting U.S. officials with a more serious political challenge than the insurgency's still potent strongholds farther north, U.S. officials and Iraqi political leaders say. In heavy fighting over the past week, U.S. forces have inflicted substantial casualties on the Shiite Muslim militia loyal to Muqtada Al-Sadr, the breakaway cleric wanted by U.S. forces on murder charges. U.S. and British troops battled Al-Sadr's forces Saturday in four southern cities, including new fighting in Amarah near the Iranian border. Firefights between U.S. forces and insurgents in the east Baghdad slum named for Al-Sadr's late father left 14 insurgents and two U.S. soldiers dead overnight Friday.

The success of Iraq's first democratic elections in more than 50 years has led to greater geopolitical gains than anyone imagined - uniting the Iraqi factions sooner than expected, while improving U.S. relations in Europe. As Iraqi officials prepared to announce the voting results on Thursday, which will create a National Assembly that will choose new government leaders and write a constitution - it's worth taking a moment to fully digest the breathtaking changes that quickly followed Iraq's historic elections.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's Governing Council signed a landmark interim constitution Monday that establishes a framework for democratic self-rule after the U.S. civil occupation ends this summer. This is a great and historic day for Iraq," said council member Adnan Pachachi, one of the key architects of the charter.
