WOODCLIFF LAKE - A defamation lawsuit filed by a borough police officer against a resident who was involved in a parking dispute was dismissed Tuesday by the New Jersey Supreme Court. The court found that Patrolman Dennis DeAngelis failed to prove that James F. Hill demonstrated "actual malice" when he published a newsletter saying the officer had perjured himself in Municipal Court when the parking ticket case was heard.

HB 1286 - Prohibiting false and defamatory statements about candidates for public office This legislation, which passed the Senate by a vote of 44 to 1, would prohibit political advertising or campaign statements that are libelous or defamatory, and committed with actual malice. HB 1286 defines libel or defamation as statements that tend to expose a person to hatred, contempt, ridicule, to deprive him or her of public confidence or social interaction, or to injure him or her in his or her business or occupation. The proposal seeks to reinstate a previous state law that was thrown out on free speech grounds by the Washington Supreme Court in 2007. The bill previously passed the House by a vote of 92 to 2 and is being delivered to the governor for her signature.
