From wire reports As Tuesday's earthquake shook, office workers who poured out of New York skyscrapers and the Pentagon were relieved it was nothing more sinister than an act of nature.
MINERAL, Va. - Tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada were jolted Tuesday by the strongest earthquake to strike the East Coast since World War II. Three weeks before the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, office workers poured out of New York skyscrapers and the Pentagon, relieved it was nothing more sinister than an act of nature. There were no known deaths or serious injuries, but cracks appeared in the National Cathedral and three capstones broke off its tower. Windows shattered and grocery stores were wrecked in Virginia, where the quake was centered. The White House and Capitol were partly evacuated.
This notice announces that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has forwarded the Information Collection Request (ICR), OMB control number 1652-0032, abstracted below to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review and approval of an extension of the currently approved collection under the Paperwork Reduction Act. The ICR describes the nature of the information collection and its expected burden. TSA published a Federal Register notice, with a 60-day comment period soliciting comments, of the following collection of information on December 30, 2011, 76 FR 82313. The collection involves using a questionnaire to collect medical information from candidates for the job of Transportation Security Officer (TSO) to ensure their qualifications to perform TSO duties pursuant ...
Cardinals 6, Orioles 2 BALTIMORE - Kyle Lohse was so good against Baltimore, it took an act of nature to get him out of the game.
By W. Meade Stith III Environmentalists have sued to stop driving on beaches in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore while the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service continues to push for more critical habitat designations in the Seashore. The stated reason for these actions is to protect the piping plover, a shorebird considered "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. In 2008, a consent decree closed the most popular beaches in the Seashore. You'd think the piping plover population is collapsing. It isn't.
There are bleak parallels between the crisis at the leaking nuclear reactors in Japan and last year's massive BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While the devastation from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan was an act of nature, building a nuclear power plant in an earthquake zone near the ocean was an engineering decision; so was drilling in an area of the Gulf with a high concentration of natural gas at a depth of 5,000 feet, which stretched the limits of technology.

PARAMARIBO, Suriname - It looks like a meteor strike: From out of nowhere, a huge clearing appears in the jungle - a deep rust- colored pit surrounded by mounds of dirt and thick stands of trees pushed to the side in dense piles of overturned soil. But this is no act of nature. It is the result of the steady labor of fewer than a dozen barefoot men, who have blasted away at the earth for three days with high-pressure water hoses and earth- movers, searching for gold and destroying a swathe of rainforest.
Friday's tragedy: Whether it totally was an unpreventable act of nature or if there were man-made contributing factors is yet to be known. But the deaths of four people near Highland Park in a flash flood -- including those of a Plum mother and two of her children -- is a sobering reminder of nature's power. While it might be impossible to eliminate all flooding in this flood-prone area, surely there are remedies to better limit its severity, even during torrential rains. Here's to that solution being found. Blunt truth: Lest anyone lament that "innocents" have been gunned down in Pittsburgh's latest spate of homicides, police Chief Nate Harper has set the record straight. Five of seven victims had been on the wrong side of the law. But while the chief laments "too many guns in the wron...
