A former Memphis police officer was acquitted Sunday of vehicular homicide stemming from a 2009 crash in which a female motorist was killed. The Criminal Court jury, however, could not reach a verdict on the lesser-included offense of reckless homicide or on reckless aggravated assault charges against Mark Weatherly.
LEBANON -- Warren County's new prosecutor says he doubts the judge will grant Ryan Widmer's request for an acquittal or new trial. The defense asked Judge Neal Bronson on Friday to free Widmer, saying evidence in the case does not back a guilty verdict.
Dutch member of Parliament Geert Wilders is on trial in the Netherlands for "incitement to hatred and discrimination." His crime was daring to criticize Islam. Mr. Wilders is the head of the Party for Freedom, the third- largest political party in the Netherlands and part of a new Dutch coalition government. S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab on Friday declined motions to acquit Dr. Cyril H. Wecht, dismiss the public corruption charges against the former Allegheny County coroner and suppress evidence at the second trial. Wecht, 77, of Squirrel Hill, is accused of using his public office for personal gain. His first trial ended in April after jurors failed to reach a verdict on any of the 41 counts of theft and fraud.
An Allegheny County jury on Friday acquitted a McKeesport man in a fatal shooting outside of the Elks lounge. The jury deliberated about five hours before finding Dominick Haynes, 23, not guilty of the Dec. 27, 2008, shooting of Tyre Hill, 25, of Duquesne. In the McKeesport incident, Haynes shot Hill in a leg after an altercation inside the lounger, police said.
A lengthy trial, including appeals, took place. The Allegheny County district attorney challenged the authority of the corner's office to be able to make that ruling and stated that only the D.A. had that kind of authority. [Cyril Wecht]'s rebuttal stated the police are an extension of the D.A.'s office, because they are investigators. It is the same as Jesse James investigating his own brother, Frank James. Eventually, the D.A. was victorious and now it is total war between the strong-willed super intellect Cyril Wecht and the Allegheny County district attorney. The result is an indictment and trial in U.S. Federal Court. Testimony concluded Thursday in the murder trial of Shannon Atwood, and his defense attorney urged the judge to acquit Atwood in the 2006 death of his girlfriend because the state had failed to prove its case. Defense attorney John Alsop said there was no question that Cheryl Murdoch was brutally and violently killed, but he argued that there was no real evidence tying his client to the crime.
