A capacity crowd greeted the Ars Nova Musicians as they took the stage Sunday for the final concert of the 33rd season of the Viva Vivaldi Festival.
The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church had excellent acoustics, which allowed for excellent discernment of individual instruments. Conductor Marylouise Nanna used this to her advantage, leading performances rich in tone and detail. Beginning with an ensemble concerto in E minor by Vivaldi, the evening went on to feature soloists, all of whom received a standing ovation.

The Colorado College Summer Music Festival will enter new territory Sunday and Monday when soprano Measha Brueggergosman, a quartet of vocal soloists, the Colorado Vocal Arts Ensemble and the festival's student orchestra conducted by Scott Yoo christen the Cornerstone Arts Theater with performances of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915.

But the theater has national significance: It's one of the first in the country with acoustics that can be electronically "tuned" for any kind of situation, so that a lecture or a play or a concert will all be equally effective.

Fifth-year conductor Stefan Freund stood, feet spread just slightly, between a shining grand piano and the seated 60 or so volunteer musicians who make up the orchestra. Even with the theater seats empty of concert-goers, what happened onstage during the rehearsal was worthy of a full house. Everyone had practiced at home since the last rehearsal, and the strings eased their way through the five movements of a suite by ragtime composer Scott Joplin. "Good, good," Freund said between measures. "That's the kind of dynamic contrast and energy I wanted.
