The click of Modernism
Julius Shulman, who died last year at 98, was arguably the most significant photographer of architecture, ever. And if we're talking about the documentation of the Case Study Houses and other shining examples of mid-century American Modernism, he was simply the best. He made stylish buildings look even more amazing than they were, though architects didn't always like what he did. Richard Neutra, for example, was scandalized when Shulman brought a lot of furniture to his shoots. In the 2009 film Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman, Judy McKee, the photographer's daughter, says, "My father would carry half of our household furniture around with him, which probably gave Richard Neutra a heart attack when he saw him drive up with all these props, because...

All the world's a screen A devoted culture vulture with deep pockets and a savvy sense of scheduling could conceivably jet about Europe over the course of about 10 weeks to take in two evenings of ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, another at the Paris Opera House, two plays at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, and full evenings of opera at La Scala in Milan, London's Royal Opera House, the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam, and in the streets of Mantua. That, however, may not prove entirely practical for everyone, and so The Screen, the 165-seat cinema house at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, is offering an alternative. Beginning Jan. 21, it will be presenting high-definition broadcasts of cultural events weekend after weekend, starting with precisely that itinerary ...

Tom Fay of Syracuse also has encountered problems with humidity in the relatively short time he has been building archtop acoustic guitars. The distinctive curved front and back of the body of an archtop guitar, which differentiates it from other acoustics with flat fronts and backs, makes the guitars more susceptible to cracking. Volume is also a key factor for these guitars, which were invented before electrics to compete with the loud horns of jazz bands. The curved body of the archtop is also meant to produce a clearer sound, since jazz chords are composed of five or six notes and can sound muddy on normal acoustic guitars. "When I give an archtop to people to play, they say it sounds odd," Fay says. "But they still want to play it some more.
Like [Victor Lopez], Fay also learned h...

'Design USA' features objects from a pivotal moment in American design, a renaissance in which designers expand beyond traditional boundaries, as witnessed by the explosion of digital technology, material innovations and inter-disciplinary collaborations," said Cara McCarty, curatorial director of the museum. "The exhibition celebrates the many ways these developments have impacted our lives and also forecasts design's great reach as we move through the next century.
"Design USA" begins with an exploration of innovation through craft, which has had a renewed importance in design during the last 10 years. The persistence of craft, attention to detail and exquisite production has influenced numerous designers, from the graceful manipulation of light in the architecture of Steven HoIl to...
