PORTLAND -- Popular ventriloquist and stand-up comedian Jeff Dunham will bring his cutting edge comedy to the Cumberland County Civic Center on March 9 as part of his 100-city "Identity Crisis" tour. Dunham and his comedic crew -- Walter the Grumpy Retiree, Achmed the Dead Terrorist, the beer-fueled redneck Bubba J and the manic purple creature Peanut -- continue to pack major venues worldwide.
When Jeff Dunham descends into the First Niagara Center tonight, he won't be alone. The rock star of ventriloquists, Dunham will be bringing along a few of his friends, too, to give their insightful commentary on world events, pop culture and anything that strikes their fancy. Look for the grumpy old Walter, the beer-loving Bubba J., Peanut and Achmed the Dead Terrorist, along with new faces like Achmed Jr. and Little Jeff.
One of the more memorable descriptions of mega-star Jeff Dunham is "a dressed-down, more digestible version of Don Rickles with multiple personality disorder." TIME magazine, meanwhile, noted of the ventriloquist and comedian's wildly popular characters, like Achmed the Dead Terrorist and Jose Jalape o on a stick, "all of them are politically incorrect, gratuitously insulting and ill tempered. The "mega" quality is apt to describe Dunham's success as he is one of the top-grossing acts in North America and Europe. His introduction of the cranky Achmed earned Dunham the distinction of having one of the Top 10 most-watched videos on YouTube (136,284,746 views earlier this week).
Read our lips: Jeff Dunham and his posse of ventriloquist dummies are headed to Consol Energy Center Dec. 31. The 3 p.m. show is part of Dunham's "Controlled Chaos" tour. Dunham has also created another character, Achmed Jr., son o Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a pop-eyed skeleton in al-Qaida drag, Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Sept. 30.
Ventriloquist Jeff Dunham traffics in the kind of politically incorrect utterances that recently landed a certain senator from Nevada in hot water. But nobody calls Dunham on it. Because it's his "suitcase posse" of dummies who say them. Achmed the Dead Terrorist, a pop-eyed skeleton in al-Qaida drag, slams Jews. Sweet Daddy Dee, a black pimp puppet, is full of blaxploitation cliches. Jose Jalapeno, a pepper on a stick, chatters away in a thick Speedy Gonzales accent.
You can't think of comedian Jeff Dunham without also thinking of his famous puppets - Walter, Peanut, Jose Jalepeno and Achmed the Dead Terrorist.
