  • LaRon Landry's practice uniform since training camp began has included a visor instead of a helmet. That was supposed to change Sunday, but it didn't. Landry was scheduled to return to practice, his ailing left Achilles tendon sufficiently strengthened, but he remained on the physically-unable-to-perform list because he injured his hamstring while working out last week in Indianapolis, coach Mike Shanahan said.

Casey, who leads the Rapids with six goals this season, will undergo surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be out approximately eight months while recovering. Casey was injured in the 38th minute of Saturday's match at Seattle Sounders FC, and an MRI taken on Monday afternoon revealed the extent of the injury. Surgery on Casey's left Achilles' tendon has been scheduled for Wednesday at Advanced Orthopedics in Denver under the supervision of Rapids team doctor Wayne Gersoff.

  • DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a reasonably fit, 61-year-old male who exercises several times a week by walking and the use of Nautilus equipment. I am 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weigh 170 pounds. I recently ruptured my Achilles tendon while jogging across a parking lot to my car in a futile attempt to stay dry during one of our frequent rain storms. How could this happen? I wasn't doing anything I haven't done many times before. I regularly use the calf machine and lift almost the full stack of weights. I didn't fall. My orthopedic surgeon suggests old age, bad luck or sin. I had participated in a clinical trial of cholesterol-lowering drugs and have read there might be a correlation between statin use and tendon damage. How can I keep this from happening again? I am not ready to resign myself ...

The metal fell on his foot, rupturing the boy's left Achilles tendon and requiring surgery.

  • DEAR DR. DONOHUE: During a basketball game I was playing in, I heard a loud popping sound. When I went to take a step, I fell to the ground. An associate told me I had a sprained ankle and that it would get better in six weeks. During that time I was in a lot of pain and had to hop up stairs, since I live on the second floor. After 10 weeks, I saw a specialist and was told to get an MRI scan and a cast walker brace. The MRI revealed that the tendon was almost completely torn. The specialist said it was too late for a brace and that I needed surgery. So far I have had two surgeries. I told my associate that if he hadn't said I had an ankle sprain, I would have had treatment earlier and might not have needed surgery. He says I would have had to have surgery anyway. Who's right? - T.T. ANS...
