In early 2010, I wrote an article on some ideas to better manage working capital. This time the focus is on the reasons why working capital and the conversion to cash are so important to commercial and industrial companies.
Let us first review the definition of working capital. It is defined as current assets (cash, accounts receivable and inventory) minus current liabilities (accounts payable, short term borrowing, current maturities of long term debt and accrued expenses).

Next to cash on deposit at your financial institution, working capital is the most important asset in your business.
Working capital is defined as current assets minus current liabilities. Current assets consist primarily of cash, accounts receivables and inventory while current liabilities consist primarily of accounts payable, short-term borrowings and accrued expenses. The difference of those two items provides the working capital measure of how much in liquid assets a company has available to support and build its business. The number can be positive or negative, depending on how much debt in the form of current liabilities, the company is carrying.

The town contingency account is running out of money, and the Legislative Council next week will be asked to beef it up with $175,000.
Finance Director Kathleen Etkin told the council during committee meetings Monday night that Mayor Scott D. Jackson would be asking for money to cover expenses that will be accrued against the emergency and contingency account before the end of the fiscal year. The town started the fiscal year with $1.2 million in the account, but it's down to $128,000 because of snow removal and other expenses.
