I'm not a fan of joint bank accounts. I think they cause more trouble (like inadvertent overdrafts) than they do good. But since people continue to use them, here are some rules that apply to these accounts:
- Ownership of funds in a joint account is based on contribution. If the account owners are married, there is a presumption of equal contribution. That presumption, however, can be overcome with evidence that contributions were not equal. If ownership of funds in a joint account becomes an issue, an analysis must be made of deposits and withdrawals to see who owns what in the account. Such an analysis can be challenging. For example, if Party A writes a check on the account to buy Rockies season tickets, and both Party A and Party B use the tickets, who gets charged with the withdra...

Alcohol sales data provide a more accurate indication of alcohol consumption than alternative methods such as population surveys. This information can be used to better understand epidemiological issues related to alcohol consumption, policy development and evaluation. Official sales records were collected for the 28 regional districts of British Columbia (BC) for 2002-2005, while homemade alcohol was estimated from survey data. Alcohol consumption rates were found to vary across geographic regions, by season, and with population level demographics. Government stores were the largest source of alcohol consumption in BC, accounting for 45.1% of total alcohol consumption in 2004. U-Brews/U-Vins accounted for 4.0%, private liquor stores accounted for 27.5% of the total, and homemade alcoho...

Debit cards have become an indispensable part of the U.S. payments system, accounting for more than a third of consumer payments at point of sale. With this development has come controversy: Card networks charge merchants fees that merchants believe are too high. And most of the fees are ad vahrem-xhzx is, based on transaction value rather than fixed fees per transaction. Given that debit cards incur a fixed cost per transaction, why do networks charge ad valorem fees? How do ad valorem fees affect payment market participants, including consumers, merchants, and card networks? And should policymakers consider regulating debit cards by requiring fixed per-transaction fees? Wang explores this controversy about debit card fee structures. His analysis shows that, when card networks and merc...

Boeing Co. has improved its cost-management procedures by giving its operating units more responsibility for controlling their costs. To accomplish this, Boeing opted to realign its accounting processes to make it easier for cost information to be broken down on a departmental basis. It also made sure that each department received the financial information needed by identifying which cost information was relevant for each unit's operations. Boeing's move toward a cost-management system that supported continuous improvement required several important adjustments, such as the implementation of a modified process-cost accounting system and the use of activity-based analysis in cost-assignment procedures. It also required a shift to product-oriented process management, a system which stress...
