  • You might think that tea party troops who emerged since Chris Collins was elected county executive in 2007 would be in accord with his sentiments about smaller government and personal responsibility. Even if they are, the tea party force appears lukewarm about throwing itself into the Collins re-election campaign with the same fervor they showed for Carl Paladino when he ran for governor.

  • Thronged by reporters this week, Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota suggested that Democrats were growing more confident in President Obama's tentative tax-cut deal with Republicans - the same accord that threatened to splinter his party 24 hours earlier. Asked why the change of heart, Mr. Conrad, Senate Budget Committee chairman, offered a simple but familiar explanation: economist Mark Zandi.

  • Summary judgment, class action, third-party tortfeasor, settlement, subrogation, unconstitutional, accord and satisfaction.

  • The Senate voted Tuesday to limit debate on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), paving the way for final ratification of the arms-control pact as key Republicans defied their party leadership and announced support for the accord. The move to invoke cloture passed by a 67-28 vote after several days of debate and unsuccessful Republican attempts to add amendments to the U.S.-Russia arms agreement.

  • Passaic County Republican leaders are set tonight to review details of an out-of-court settlement last week that short- circuited a brewing political power struggle within the party. Wayne Mayor Scott T. Rumana, who also is the township's GOP leader, was upbeat Monday about the recent agreement brokered with county Republican Chairman Michael Mecca.

  • WASHINGTON - The Senate on Wednesday approved a nuclear-arms treaty with Russia and a bill to aid 9/11 first responders, wrapping up a lame-duck congressional session that left Democrats jubilant and some Republicans feeling whipsawed. The treaty, dubbed New START, appeared to be in trouble as recently as this weekend, when the two top Republicans in the Senate came out against it. But as was repeatedly the case over the final days of the 111th Congress, other GOP senators failed to hold the party line and joined Democrats to pass the accord in a 71-26 vote.

  • DeSoto County utility officials on Wednesday dealt with the tall - working on a deal for joint use of a communications system and four towers - and the small, hearing of a die-off of biological "bugs" that break down sewage. A memorandum of agreement between the DeSoto Regional Utility Authority and the county's E-911 Commission on tower use is down to the details, and the utility approved a draft with revisions such as an "escape clause" that allows either party to cancel the accord if funding falls through.

  • SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today released the results of its accelerated leak survey of all its gas transmission pipelines, which it launched in September 2010. The utility responded promptly in all 59 cases where it discovered a leak that created a potential hazard. For other indications of non-hazardous leaks, PG&E scheduled further investigation or repairs in accord with industry standards. In addition, a study by third-party consultants concludes that PG&E's leak rates and reporting practices compare favorably with the rest of the industry.

  • BEIJING -- The watershed six-party accord concluded Tuesday with North Korea holds huge long-term promise for the Korean Peninsula and beyond, but pitfalls lie ahead. It could put an end to the Korean War with a peace treaty half a century after hostilities ended, establish diplomatic relations between the United States and North Korea and lay the groundwork for a new security arrangement for Northeast Asia.

  • Upon taking the oath, President Barack Obama confronted an astonishing array of enormous challenges he inherited from his predecessor, arguably one of our nation's worst presidents. Obama set a blistering pace by addressing the staggering list of issues, a great recession and two wars, detainee torture and climate change, health care and nuclear weapons. Enjoying an average 65 percent approval rating in polls, Obama announced a plan for the ailing economy. Congressional Republicans rebuffed Obama's efforts to seek bipartisan accord. Despite presiding over a party with dwindling followers, a lack of diversity and no new ideas, the GOP leaders preferred obstructionism and sanctimonious pronouncements. For them, compromise means having the other side yield to their demands.
