  • I was 6 years old when I fell in love for the first time. The object of my affection was singer Lesley Gore, who I first saw on an episode of the 1960s television series Batman; she played the melodious accomplice to Catwoman (Julie Newmar, the first lust of my life). In between finding ways to antagonize Batman and Robin, Gore found time to sing her hit "California Nights." I was smitten with the kitten. The singer-songwriter, still known for such catchy 1960s pop tunes as "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me," recently turned 60 and cut a new album, Ever Since (Engine Company Records, 2005). On Saturday, June 10, she gives the "It's My Party" Party, a concert to commemorate the grand opening of RainbowVision Santa Fe, a new retirement community oriented to gay and lesbian retirees.

  • The manufacturers of Zyklon B, the drug the Nazis used in their gas chambers, attempted this defense.111 But a purpose standard does not require the genocidal intent to be the primary purpose; a significant purpose will suffice. [...] the manufacturers satisfied the purpose test because the effectiveness of their product in killing was a secondary purpose, in that it increased the demand for their product and, consequendy, their profits.112 The secondary purpose argument is not a purpose-based "hook" for top government actions similar to Mugabe's fast-track land reform, as Mugabe did not even have a secondary desire to destroy the white farmers.

  • TEHRAN, Iran - The lawyer for an Iranian woman sentenced to be stoned on an adultery conviction said Monday that he and her children are worried the delayed execution could be carried out soon with the end of a moratorium on death sentences for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. In an unusual turn in the case, the lawyer also confirmed that Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was lashed 99 times last week in a separate punishment meted out because a British newspaper ran a picture of an unveiled woman mistakenly identified as her. Under Iran's clerical rule, women must cover their hair in public. The newspaper later apologized for the error.
