  • The Smithsonian is coming to Henderson, Ky., toting a traveling exhibit about American roots music, but there's lots more in store besides the exhibit itself. There's an Ohio Valley Art League exhibit called "Music in Color" by 25 regional artists, the Homegrown Bluegrass Festival at Audubon State Park, "The Tri-State Teen Idol Search," a performance lecture series, a "Roots in Music" radio show, a five-session "Bring a Lunch & Munch With Artists" series, a "Sing-Spiration" in Audubon Mill Park, a "Graceland Grub" cooking class, and a grand opening preview party.

  • Even those who wandered into the film-viewing room at Frontier Cafe on Saturday strictly to watch the live concerts on television couldn't help but take away the message of the local Live Earth event. Everyone was greeted by climate-change displays showing how a rise in sea level might affect Bath and Portland, literature on global warming and laptop computers that allowed people to sign up for an individual carbon challenge to reduce emissions.

  • When Franklin Regional freshman Emily Stoken was selected for a solo in the chorus' Valentine Cabaret, she asked her classmate and friend, Demi Schwartz, to accompany her on the piano. Schwartz accepted and Stoken gave her the sheet music for the piece, "Someone Like You.

  • THE RED VIOLIN. The romantic adventures of one violin, noted for its superior craftsmanship and unusual red varnish, span four centuries in Francois Giraud's 1998 drama that relates the beauty, desire and obsession that can accompany music. Giraud uses a contemporary auction and a 17th-century fortune-telling as framing devices to unspool the violin's history (and its potential future), concentrating on four episodes: the violin's difficult birth in Italy; its encounters with a musical prodigy in 18th-century Vienna and a possessed Victorian-era English composer; and lastly the instrument's uneasy time during China's Cultural Revolution. In English and various languages with subtitles. 8 p.m. MON ONCLE ANTOINE. Claude Jutra's 1971 coming-of-age story is highly regarded north of the bord...

  • With the coming of the winter season, the voices of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale will be raised once more in joyous, worshipful, and rich musical interplay. It will mark the 28th consecutive season for the 24-voice chorus and the second holiday program for musical director Joshua Habermann. "It's been my experience that choral music in particular has been an expression in my life of more than just a simple beautiful melody," said Habermann. "It speaks to people from many different spiritual backgrounds. "In just about any practice that you can imagine, whether it's a sacred practice or a secular practice - or just a ritualistic observing of the calendar - music always seems to accompany those things, and choral music in particular. It always has had a special place in that kind of a trad...

  • SEARSMONT, Maine -- The Christmas music playing on the radio one recent afternoon made a jaunty, seasonal soundtrack to accompany the flying hands that deftly put together Christmas wreaths, kissing balls and garlands. It may be the most wonderful time of the year at Evergreen Valley Farm and Greenhouses, but it is also by far the most hectic, according to owner Bud Otis. He turns on the heat at 5 a.m. in the greenhouse workshops, the wreath makers arrive at 6 a.m. and the night shift doesn't get done until 8 p.m. The company squeezes a third of its annual business from the beginning of November to Dec. 10, and every second counts.

  • Neon lights. Pastel colors. Big hair. Yes the 1980s are back, if only for one night at the North 82 Gymnasium across from NSA Mid- South. Those in attendance took a trip down memory lane as they danced, some in full '80s garb, in groups to their favorite song. Disk Jockey's Etc. provided equipment such as large video screens to play videos to accompany the music and lighting. Ron Olson of FM 100 was the deejay.

  • The lineup for this year's "Evening on the River" fundraiser includes a German band that plays New Orleans-style jazz. It's not as much of a novelty as you might think, Autobahn stereotypes aside.
