Paul McCartney once wrote an innocuous ditty called "Silly Love Songs" that remains one of the more embarrassing moments of the former Beatles' career. To borrow from Sir Paul, "what's wrong with that" are insipid lyrics and a trite melody. It also reveals how hard it is to write a great love song. Since William Shakespeare insightfully documented the twists and turns of affairs of the heart, writers have struggled to capture the nuances of love and romance. With songwriters, the task is even harder given the concise form and the need to accompany lyrics with suitable music.
How does an artist deal with this kind of conflict? "I don't necessarily support sexual connotations or vulgar language but I do think that there is a time and place for songs like that," admitted [Rhea Dummett], who, like [Sonia Collymore], did not compose or sing the questionable lyrics that accompany a handful of tracks. "People want to hear real stories in songs so if the song needs those things to make a point, then why not?" she continued. Rhea cautiously admits, "My only concern is for young people and the messages that they are given. I think that vulgar lyrics can be left out because there is a lot of ways to say something without using a curse word. There's plenty of music, heritage and culture in Santa Fe, but an undeniable hunger for more pulses through the community. However, you may be left disappointed that they would stake their band name on such a radio-friendly song that isn't even long enough to see the three-minute mark. "Bull Black Nova" drizzles listeners with cosmic splotches of guitars and keyboards that accompany Jeff Tweedy' s anxious lyrics. The booklet that comes with Polly Jean Harvey's sixth album, "Uh Huh Her," is quite different from the liner notes that accompany most other CDs. There are no reprinted lyrics, no glamour shots, no shout-outs to God. The paper unfolds into a gallery of self- portraits, severe photographs that Harvey took of herself in moving cars and bathrooms, as a shadow in her parents' parlor mirror, with her face garishly painted, and with it scrubbed mercilessly plain. On top of the photos she's pasted bits of paper, questions, and notes that Harvey wrote to herself in the studio while she was recording her new songs.
