Her party reserved accommodation for six people two months in advance and requested a wheelchair-accessible room. No problem, the hotel reservationist said.

• Court Must Accommodate Disabled Witness, Says Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court

If a witness with a disability requests accommodation in order to testify, the court must provide this accommodation as long as it is reasonable - but only the party proffering the witness has standing to challenge a denial of a requested accommodation, Massachusetts' highest court has ruled. The plaintiff, a stroke victim, sought permission from the court for assistance from her family members to testify against a defendant accused of assaulting her. Before trial, her competency was evaluated by a court-appointed expert, who found that she was competent to testify. He noted that certain methods of questioning her facilitated her communications.
