- Another Channel Marker Goes Missing
Just before Memorial Day weekend, a channel marker on one of the lake's most active areas was destroyed. It was the second marker destroyed in less than a week, according to Appalachian Power Company, which maintains the lake's navigation system. John Shepelwich, a spokesman for Appalachian Power, said the R16 marker, which is located in the S-curve near Smith Mountain Lake State Park, was reported missing on Friday, May 27. Because of heavy traffic on the lake, it was not scheduled for replacement until Tuesday, he said. Shepelwich said a crew replacing a marker during one of the busiest weekends on the lake would have been a potential navigation hazard. The piling, however, was removed to prevent potential boating accidents.
