At the present time, there are no clear outcomes in Turkey's European Union (EU) accession process. By the end of the two years following the rise of the pro-Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP) to the government in 2002, Turkey's accession process entered into a stalemate. Potent political opposition to the Turkish candidacy in Europe has escalated, despite a staunch Turkish political commitment since 1999 to meet the Copenhagen Criteria for admission. The Balkan countries of Southeast Europe will be the last cluster of nations to go through the rigorous process of candidacy and accession to the European Union. They will be part of a "United States of Europe," Winston Churchill's famous phrase from 1946 when he urged its formation. Having just returned from a three-week stay in Dubrovnik, Croatia, the beautiful old walled city on the Dalmatian Coast, which George Bernard Shaw once called "the pearl of the Adriatic," I can report that there is much enthusiasm to join the EU in Croatia and the neighboring countries I visited.
Schilling expounds the pros and cons on the proposed accession of Turkey to the European Union. Among other things, he points out that though Turkey has made great economic strides in the past few decades, it still falls short of EU productivity and living standards, and, that if invited to join the Union, it will bring a burdensome poverty with it.

Bulgaria's efforts to fight corruption have not gone unnoticed. On June 6, International Monetary Fund Director Dominique Strauss- Kahn praised Bulgaria's economic stability. A day earlier, Bulgaria was accepted as a member of the World Bank's "Reformers' Club;" the nation ranks among the top 10 of the 200 countries surveyed. According to a recent survey by Ernst & Young, in 2007, Bulgaria ranked 17 in the world in foreign investments. Clearly, this economic stability and reform could have not been possible in a criminal and corrupt environment.
