  • A high school student from Indonesia has found a home away from home with a Davis Creek family. Rich and Beth Ruiz and their two children serve as the host family for Zakia Syifa, an 18-year-old from Java. Syifa just completed her studies at South Charleston High School and has lived with the Ruiz family since August as part of the Academic Year in America Program, a nonprofit program that seeks to promote understanding through cultural exchange.

  • Teacher corps to grow The Baltimore Community Foundation announced on Friday it received "a major gift" from philanthropists Robert E. Meyerhoff and Rheda Becker to the foundation's Baltimore City Public Schools Fund. The gift, the amount of which was not disclosed, will help double Teach For America's corps size in Baltimore City public schools by the 2010-2011 academic year, according to the announcement. Teach For America is a group of top college graduates who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools. In 2008-09 there were 163 Teach for America participants in Baltimore. Currently there are 243 members teaching in Baltimore public schools, and next year there will be 318.

  • From staff reports New Haven outdoor track and field senior Shannon Gagne has been named Capital One Academic All-America College Division Player of the Year. Gagne became just the third athlete in Division II history to win five national titles in the sport. She won both the 200-meter dash and the 400 at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

  • The Capital-Journal KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- After an 11-year absence, Lincoln University will return as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association beginning in the 2010-11 academic year.

  • West Virginia University men's basketball guard Johannes Herber was named a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selection by the College Sports Information Directors of American on Wednesday. Herber, a native of Germany, carries a 4.0 grade-point average in political science. The junior earned Academic All-America honors for the second straight year. Last year, as a third-team selection, he was the youngest student-athlete represented.

  • LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. -Qualified high school students are being offered an opportunity to spend an academic year, three-month program or summer holiday in Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, Australia or South Africa as part of the ASSE International Student Exchange Program. ASSE, based in Laguna Beach, Calif., was established in 1976 as the American Scandinavian Student Exchange by the Swedish government to organize student exchange programs between Sweden and the United States. Soon, Denmark, Norway and Finland joined as participants.

Haack, O.F.M., associate professor of art history and studio art in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at St. Bonaventure University, was inducted into the Art Students League of New York on May 2 in New York City. During his sabbatical this year, Brother David submitted a portfolio of recent paintings and was accepted at the Art Students League, America's premier Atelier school in the French academic tradition, to study portraiture and figure studies in the medium of traditional oil paint.
