  • More than 25 Whittier-area schools have been named to an annual Honor Roll compiled by California's business community for not only increasing academic success, but narrowing the achievement gap for minority students at their campuses. Every year, California Business for Education Excellence identifies its "Star" or "Scholar" schools based on results of annual state testing and the California High School Exit Exam.

  • College retention and graduation rates are significantly lower for African American and Hispanic American students. Limited research has been conducted on the relationship between academic motivation and perceived social support. The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of social support as a predictor of academic motivation and academic success across cultures, socioeconomic status (SES) and generation with college experience as predictors were also assessed. Participants consisted of 93 undergraduates from three cultural groups. Results showed SES, family generation with college experience, and perceived social support were predictive of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for African Americans.

  • Proposals and programs to use publicly-funded vouchers to move children from public to private schools are perhaps the most controversial educational reform of the last two decades. In the current educational policy environment, characterized by choice programs such as vouchers, charter schools, and open-enrollment plans, it is increasingly important for reform measures to demonstrate tangible gains in student outcomes. This article focuses specifically on the use of achievement data in the assessment of vouchers for private schools. There are many reasons one could support school choice, but evidence of inherently higher student achievement in private schools may not be among them. Indeed, one need not oppose choice to see the weaknesses of the academic achievement arguments made on be...

  • Closing the academic achievement gap between low-income children and their more well-to-do classmates is a work force issue, as well as a moral problem lawmakers hope to solve by 2020. Sen. Toni Harp, D-New Haven, co-chairwoman of a task force charged with laying out the solutions, Monday said the state has the distinction of having the widest achievement gap in the country, while also being one of the wealthiest states.

  • When Daniel Pearl Magnet High School opened three years ago in Van Nuys, the journalism-oriented campus got off to a rocky start. About one-third of its students left during the first year. Some abandoned the school because of its small size, while others fled because of tensions with students and faculty at Birmingham Community Charter High School - the parent campus sharing space with Pearl.

  • This paper investigates gender differences in the academic ethic and academic achievement among college students. We used survey data collected from students at a medium-size state university in the Southeast. Results of our analysis indicate that women are more likely to possess an academic ethic than men and that women also tend to have higher GPAs. Furthermore, regression analysis with GPA as the dependent variable revealed differences between men and women in terms of significant predictors. For women, active participation in student clubs or groups was positively associated with GPA. For men, employment was negatively related with GPA. We used Coleman's (1988) concept of social capital, Chodorow's (1978) psychoanalytic feminist theory, and Gilligan's (1982) theory of women's develo...

  • The purpose of this study was to measure whether Christian programs had a positive influence on the academic achievement of low-literate male inmates. The sample consisted of 124 male inmates in a closed security prison in the southeastern United States who were participating in an Adult Basic Education (ABE) program. The researcher grouped the sample into two categories: (1) Christian inmates [n=55] and (2) non-Christian inmates [n=69]. The findings of this study found that the inmates in both sub-groups had achieved statistically significant learning gains in the reading, math, and language skill areas. In addition, this study found that the Christian inmates had statistically significant greater learning gains in the reading and language skill areas than the non-Christian inmates. Th...

  • TEANECK -- The road to improving achievement in the township school district includes professional development for teachers, targeting instruction to areas where students need extra help, and engaging parents in their children's learning. These are some of the areas that district principals and administrators outlined during a two-hour presentation Wednesday that focused on raising standards for students after a report showed that four out of seven schools failed to meet federal benchmarks for improvement.
