FARMINGTON - The Mt. Blue Regional School District is looking into a possible legal challenge of a right of way that for decades has been used by students and parents as a shortcut to the W.G. Mallett School from Perham Street in downtown Farmington.
Three property owners who abut the right of way contend the district's easements across their properties are no longer valid and have put up a sign and barriers to discourage people from using the 15-foot wide lane. The residents use the way to park their cars and access their homes and a garage.

RIDGEWOOD - Village residents turned to their state senator on Wednesday for answers on how to address years of flooding issues caused by the overflow of the Hohokus Brook.
State Sen. Kevin O'Toole, R-Wayne, toured several back yards on Burnside Place that abut the brook. Some of the houses along the winding road and neighboring streets sustained extensive flood damage during Hurricane Irene in August and in earlier storms, such as Tropical Storm Floyd in 1999.

Your house may have a beautiful outdoor living space, perfect for quiet morning coffee or fun evening get-togethers. But if adjacent homes loom large, or your home backs up on public land, you can't truly relax until your "al fresco" space becomes a little more private.
It's a particular problem for homeowners in close-in suburbs, where backyards abut and you may as well invite the neighbors to everything you do outside since they're pretty much right there with you anyway. But even spacious yards can feel exposed, with neighboring lots impinging on personal space.

Pierce Atwood and city officials have reached a tentative deal in which the law firm would pay the financially troubled Portland Fish Exchange an undisclosed amount of money if the city-owned auction house agrees to restrict development on two empty lots that abut the law firm's new waterfront headquarters.
The development restriction would protect the law firm's view of the Fore River. At the same time, the restriction would allow fishermen to continue using the lots to repair their nets.

Notes, quotes and anecdotes in the aftermath of Tuesdays election, while trying to remember the third reason Rick Perry ran for president:
More Puget Envy: Again we hear the hackneyed complaint that Seattle stole the election or Puget Sound got its way one more time or the eastern half of the state was totally ignored. (Example: The anti-tolling initiative failed but was opposed in only 12 of 39 counties; nine of those counties abut Puget Sound). This lament is just silly. Folks in Seattle and around Puget Sound will never apologize for their role in the democratic process. Ironically, many people afflicted with Puget Envy are strict Constitutionalists, and that particular document affirms the one man, one vote concept.
