  • Dear Annie: I have a problem with my parents, both in their mid- 60s. To put it bluntly, I hate them. I no longer want anything to do with them and would like to send them a letter saying so. My wife thinks that's a bad idea. My parents are mean, manipulative, verbally abusive and unpleasant. Two years ago, my youngest sister committed suicide. The first thing my mother said was, "We did everything we could for her." Hah. The two of them are so selfish, I cannot bear it any longer, and I don't want my sons around them.

  • . Does my generation have a role in America's future?" I am sure this question has been asked for many years and that each generation has affected America in both positive and negative ways. However, I feel that my generation will change the future of America in many positive ways. I believe that the twenty-first century is very unique, and that young adults like myself are being challenged to be creative, hard working, and focused. Some of the ways America's future will be affected by my generation are new medical developments; harsher laws on abusive spouses or parents; a higher standard of education; stronger families; more political involvement; curtailed drug abuse and violence; and creation of more jobs.

  • Dear Annie: I was physically and emotionally abused by my father when I was growing up. My life was a nightmare. My mother never intervened. Worse, she also hit me and emotionally abused me. I grew up afraid of people. Now, in my adult life, I suffer anxiety and panic attacks. A psychiatrist even diagnosed me with post-traumatic stress disorder. I have been in therapy most of my life. Today, I am married to a wonderful man, and we have a beautiful baby. The problem is my mother. She denies the abuse ever happened. Then, in her next breath, she will say I deserved everything I got because I was such a horrible child. She is trying to convince me that soon I will be hitting my own child. She blames me for my anxiety, saying I dwell too much on the past.

  • Dear Amy: My best friend's dad has extreme anger problems. In the past he has hit his son at least once, though I don't know if anything else has happened.

  • This girl is in trouble," Renee Zellweger's character declares in "Case 39," her first horror movie in 16 years. "I can FEEL it. As can we all. Zellweger, at 41 not really someone we'd call "girl" anymore, appears in full career regression with this generic supernatural thriller. A fine actress with an Academy Award, you'd think she would be far removed from playing a social worker trying to figure out if this creepy kid she's saved from abusive parents was the one who needed saving.

  • This is in response to an article in the Sun Journal March 10, "Parenting program faces state budget ax. The . It helps abusive parents and teaches them the right way to be parents. Each year it helps out between 150 to 200 families. If the program gets cut, all of the families being helped would go without help regarding parenting. There is a chance that some parents might get angry over little things and start being abusive. That would not be good.

  • Sen. Barack Obama will portray himself Thursday night as an agent of change for mainstream America, but his eight-year voting record in the Illinois Senate shows the Democrat was on occasion an agent of isolation who took stands - particularly on anti-crime legislation - that put him to the left of his own party. Mr. Obama was the only member of the state Senate to vote against a bill to prohibit the early release of convicted criminal sexual abusers; was among only four who voted against bills to toughen criminal sentences and to increase penalties for "gangbangers" and dealers of Ecstasy; and voted "present" on a bill making it harder for abusive parents to regain custody of their children, a Washington Times review of Illinois legislative records shows.
