It appears that a recent column of mine had an effect similar to a Rorschach inkblot: People read their own personal experiences and/ or biases into it and reacted to it from that perspective. The column involved a question from the mother of a 19-year-old young woman whose 19-year-old boyfriend was, according to Mom, prone to sarcasm and putdowns. On the other hand, he was headed for college, didn't smoke, drink or do drugs, and had a coherent plan for his future.
Dear Annie: I am an 18-year-old college freshman. In high school, I was in an unhealthy relationship for nearly two years. My ex- boyfriend was verbally and emotionally abusive, and I'm still working through the pain he caused me. I am now in another relationship, and my new boyfriend is very understanding and supportive. After my ex and I broke up, I told him I no longer wanted to have anything to do with him again. When he graduated a year before I did, I thought I could put the entire episode behind me. However, he is still trying to remain in contact. I've blocked him from my e- mail, but he creates new accounts under new names. His messages are infrequent, but whenever I receive them, I am greatly bothered and don't know how to respond.
Dear Amy: My boyfriend and I have a dog, "Sparky." He takes her for a walk every evening. It's their ritual, but now he's ignoring her. I think that he is mistreating our dog to get back at me for an argument we had a few days ago. He has done this before, and it bothers me to see Sparky standing there looking up at him expectantly with her leash in her mouth. He won't have anything to do with her. He just sits there with a smug look on his face, ignoring her. I can tell she's confused.
