  • It appears that a recent column of mine had an effect similar to a Rorschach inkblot: People read their own personal experiences and/ or biases into it and reacted to it from that perspective. The column involved a question from the mother of a 19-year-old young woman whose 19-year-old boyfriend was, according to Mom, prone to sarcasm and putdowns. On the other hand, he was headed for college, didn't smoke, drink or do drugs, and had a coherent plan for his future.

  • Dear Annie: I am an 18-year-old college freshman. In high school, I was in an unhealthy relationship for nearly two years. My ex- boyfriend was verbally and emotionally abusive, and I'm still working through the pain he caused me. I am now in another relationship, and my new boyfriend is very understanding and supportive. After my ex and I broke up, I told him I no longer wanted to have anything to do with him again. When he graduated a year before I did, I thought I could put the entire episode behind me. However, he is still trying to remain in contact. I've blocked him from my e- mail, but he creates new accounts under new names. His messages are infrequent, but whenever I receive them, I am greatly bothered and don't know how to respond.

  • Dear Amy: My boyfriend and I have a dog, "Sparky." He takes her for a walk every evening. It's their ritual, but now he's ignoring her. I think that he is mistreating our dog to get back at me for an argument we had a few days ago. He has done this before, and it bothers me to see Sparky standing there looking up at him expectantly with her leash in her mouth. He won't have anything to do with her. He just sits there with a smug look on his face, ignoring her. I can tell she's confused.

  • THIS WEEK'S PROBLEM: There is this boy that I went with, and he used to yell at me and treat me bad, and I didn't like it. Now we don't go together. I have another boyfriend, and he really is still bothering me and stuff, like we still go together. I don't know what I should do. Should I talk to him or just leave him alone? - 15-year-old Augusta girl TEEN REPORTER KAMILLE BOSTICK SAYS: First, I commend you for getting out of an abusive, unhealthy relationship. Any time you're with someone who yells at you and treats you badly, it's good to get away from him (or her).

  • JOPLIN, Mo. - When the deadly Joplin tornado destroyed her father's home, Alisha Courtney had no place to turn. So she went back to live with her abusive boyfriend, just weeks after fleeing his regular beatings. Now she's reaped the consequences: she's lost custody of her 3-year-old daughter after police raided his home and allegedly found a methamphetamine lab.

  • Dear Harlan: I have been going out with my boyfriend for three years. Five months ago, he asked me to move out of my parents' place and in with him. Even though my family was against this, we are living together now. Not only does he not help at home, he has started hitting me and not letting me come home. He says "Here is not your home, and I can prove it to you by not letting you in, since the apartment is under my name" (but we each pay half for everything).

  • Established by an act of the General Assembly and named after a city in England, Portsmouth celebrated its 260th birthday Feb. 27. In recognition of the day, Starboards Coffee Kiosk has three drinks that combine history with good taste. The Col. Crawford Cappuccino is named for Portsmouth founder William Crawford, the wealthy shipowner who served the city in several capacities, including judge and House of Burgesses representative. The drink is a blend of dark and white chocolates, caramel syrup, double espresso, foamed milk and whipped cream. The Marquis de Lafayette Latte honors the Frenchman who served as major general under George Washington during the American Revolution. It's a double espresso with warm milk, cinnamon syrup and whipped cream topped with proprietor Betsy Cartier's ...

  • This community is still grieving the death of Jahlil Clements, an 11-year-old, sweet, and very responsible boy, who was beloved by family, friends, classmates and teachers alike. And it is horrifying to listen to the number of people who blame his mother, a victim of terrible abuse, for her son's tragic loss of life. Most of us know that Jahlil died heroically trying to save his mother's life. Her abusive boyfriend began savagely beating her as she was driving Jahlil and his two friends home, after an evening of skating. Unable to stop the blows, and starting to lose control of the car, she pulled the car over to the median of the interstate, most likely saving the lives of everyone in the vehicle. The beating continued, as Jahlil's mom was dragged out of the car. In a courageous attemp...

  • For three years, Elizabeth Valencia was stuck in an abusive relationship. Her boyfriend would beat her for no reason and Valencia had no one to turn to for advice on how to break away.

  • Dear Abby: I am 23 and involved with a man who is younger than I am. When we started our relationship, he was awesome and very kind. Now, six months later, he has changed. He is always yelling at me and telling me what to do. When I do what he says, it's still not right or good enough. After we were together for one month, we moved back to my home in New Mexico, and that's when the problems started. At first, it was only name-calling. I have tried to break up with him, but he won't let me. He keeps me awake and won't let me leave the room to go to the bathroom or get a drink of water until I agree to stay with him. He has even laid his hands on me at times.
