When Sky was brought to the shelter last year, the same pastor continued to bring her the McDonald's she loved every week and he prayed for a turnaround. When he couldn't make his regular visit one week, he gave [Rosie Garza] money to buy her the McDonald's treat. With Garza's loving care, Sky reached the point where the pastor and his wife could take Sky out on walks. They adopted her.
I never imagined that she would walk out on a leash," Garza said. "It's like she's never been homeless at all. It was a complete miracle.
"(Rosie) takes on the hardest cases. It doesn't matter if the dog has crushed legs, whatever. She puts the animals first in all situations. She gets along with pets better than people," he said, laughing. "It drives her nuts when she sees somebody do something stupid...

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. - A judge who lamented he could not legally impose a stiffer sentence gave the maximum two-year jail term Wednesday to a woman who abused her seven children and tortured and killed dozens of family pets, sometimes in the presence of the children, burying animal carcasses in her suburban Long Island backyard.
Sharon McDonough, 44, pleaded guilty last month to animal abuse and child endangerment charges after authorities said she created what her son called "a concentration camp for the animals" in her Selden, N.Y., home. It was that adult son, Douglas McDonough, who turned in his mother to authorities in 2009.

April is Prevention of Animal Cruelty month. There are many ways an animal can be treated in an inhumane and cruel manner.
Basically, just seeing an animal as a stray out on the streets fending for its own survival is a great example of animal cruelty. A human being is responsible for this animal being abandoned on the street and heading for a tragic outcome.

In November 2009, two eight-week-old beagle puppies were discovered shivering in a ditch by the side of the road, almost hairless due to a severe case of demodectic mange that had gone untreated. That was the day Jill Deegan, Botetourt's assistant commonwealth's attorney, decided something had to be done to protect and help those animals who have been victims of abuse.
Deegan poured her heart into making sure the puppies, affectionately named Frost and Scout, got the medical attention they needed, as well as the love and attention they had not received from their previous owners. Both dogs suffered from secondary infections, as well as horrible yeast infections, which caused everything they touched to smell like biscuits, the source of the puppies' nickname, "Biscuits.

Justice overdue for abused animals

Marilyn Goodreau carried a cardboard box into the dining room and began piling photographs of animals on the table. There were hundreds of them - before-and-after shots of horses, dogs, ponies, foxes. These are the rescued, the saved.
In her 30 years as the director of the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals in Windham, Goodreau personally has overseen - and sometimes been the cause of - the rescue of thousands of abused and neglected animals, mostly horses.

Three men were charged Wednesday, including the day care operator's husband, and authorities were seeking two others.
