One of every four American women will suffer some form of domestic abuse, often emotional manipulation, at some time in their lives, Mary Travers Murphy said Sunday. Murphy added that the problem of domestic abuse is more widespread than sometimes thought because only one in every seven cases is reported to authorities. Bishop Joseph Gerry has released statistics about sexual abuse by priests in Maine in a letter mailed to 82,000 homes around the state. The numbers of abusers and victims, Gerry wrote, are "most disheartening.
The Diocese of Richmond revealed Friday that it had found 19 "plausible" cases of child sexual abuse by priests in a review of records from 1950 to 2002. The cases involved 24 victims. Just ask the millions of Greeks facing pay cuts as a result of their government lying about the true state of their economy in order to join the euro 10 years ago. The Greek government is not the only one to massage official data at their citizens' expense. Here in Britain, our election campaign saw Prime Minister Gordon Brown accused of fiddling with crime, immigration and spending statistics, all to further his own political interests.
WOOSTER -- Church of the Saviour will be the site of a seminar for pastors and counselors on the subject of sexual abuse on Jan. 20, with Mark Ongley of Restored Image Ministries as presenter. Studies reveal nearly one-third of women and one-fifth of men have experienced some form of sexual abuse. Such statistics hold true even for places of worship. And yet resources for such victims are sadly lacking, especially among churches. While most clergy have received training to help prevent abuse from happening on church property, few know how to help victims recover from such trauma.
