SIDOARJO, Indonesia - For four long years, Reni Sualeha has lived in the shadow of a monster, a menacing chemical flow of fetid gray mud that belches unchecked from the bowels of the earth near her home.
Known as the Lusi mud volcano, its spread is so relentless - burping noxious gas, swallowing communities, killing 14 people and forcing the evacuations of 60,000 - that some say it could star in its own sci-fi thriller.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (Reuters) - Credit Suisse is arranging a new loan package for a holding company of Indonesia's Bakrie family, according to sources close to the matter, in a deal meant to help the group repay around $1 billion of debt.
PT Bakrie & Brothers Tbk, the holding company controlled by Indonesia's wealthiest family, said this month it hoped to raise $1.2 billion by selling off assets, including a stake in coal company Bumi Resources. Proceeds would be used to pay off its debt.

At face value, the Indonesian economy has been hitting high notes for the past two years, underlain by solid macroeconomic policies and led by strong consumer demand. That is not the whole story, though. Indonesia has now been hit hard by high international oil prices, just at the time it has become a net oil importer. Analysts say the money being spent on fuel subsidies is just one example of Indonesia's failure to act to improve its position in the global marketplace. With the higher cost of oil has come pressure on the rupiah. It weakened to more than 10,000 to the US dollar for the first time in three and a half years on Aug 22, and many see it moving further south if the government fails to act. Pres Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also has the power, through presidential instructions, to...

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- The World Health Organization has detailed the first evidence that a person likely caught the bird flu virus from a human, then passed a slightly mutated version to another person. But experts said Friday the genetic change does not increase the threat of a pandemic.
The investigation said the mutation of the H5N1 strain of the virus occurred in a 10-year-old Indonesian boy who was part of the largest cluster ever reported. The index case is believed to have been infected by poultry. She then likely passed it to the boy and five other blood relatives. The boy is then thought to have infected his father, whose samples showed the same mutation, according to the report obtained by The Associated Press.
