  • This fall more than most, Western New York's visual arts scene is roaring. To get a sense of the breathless activity in galleries and museums this month, all you have to do is head out to Allentown for the neighborhood's monthly gallery walk, where several new exhibitions will welcome visitors tonight.

  • Yet he does have an innate talent, especially in terms of color relationships, design and technique. Besides being a visual artist, [James Pearson] is also a musician and composer, and the influence of music on his abstract painting is very evident--he describes the works in this show as "tone poems." Both in terms of structure and the improvisational aspect of his technique, Pearson's canvases demonstrate a musical sensibility and intuition that gives the work its charm and vibrancy. In this, he has obviously taken a page from the Swiss-born Expressionist painter Paul Klee (who was also a musician), of whom he speaks highly and with whom he clearly identifies. Wassily Kandinsky is a similar influence in this regard, subscribing as Pearson does to Kandinsky's ideas of form as expression...

  • Director Peter Hedges (Pieces of April) cowrote the script with Pierce Gardner, and they add their own sparks to the familiar secondtime-around formula, such as a funny moment when [Dan Burns] hides in a shower so that he's not discovered by his daughter [Jane], but [Marie] has to hop in the tub as well. It's a little precious at times, notably when the family performs their own personal talent show, yet Hedges always grounds the characters in realistic behavior so that the film ultimately lives up to its title. Binoche is a beguiling presence and [Steve Carell] has a slew of wonderful fatherly moments; when Cara says about her boyfriend, "You don't have to worry: When it comes to sex he wants to wait," Dan stammers, "What about that statement is supposed to give me comfort?' As Dan rem...

  • Jill Fitterer's striking pair of iconic images entitled From "The Nomad's Discovery: Chamber of Icons," with their stately half-bird-half-man figures are right out of a pharaoh's tomb. They dramatically portray the yin-and-yang, the before and after, of the printmaker's art. On the left is the carved and inked birchwood wood block of the image which faces the resulting reverse image woodcut print, leaving the two figures confronting each other. Stephanie Bacon's Histories is a labor-intensive tapestry of printed and hand written text, commercial and found imagery and artifacts that is a layered commentary on where we are as a society. Even Bill Carmen has gotten brazen in this show. His normally subdued illustrative vignettes give way to a madcap sculptural piece featuring a crazed "car...

  • [Jill Barthorpe]'s geraniums leap like fireworks against the neutral background, and yet color isn't what makes the painting most memorable. A gossamer vertical rectangle, perhaps an implied windowpane, is superimposed over the central axis of "Coral Geraniums." It seems suspended in nothingness, independent of naturalistic space. Such abstract planes invigorate all of Barthorpe's canvasses. Young Pear Tree" and "Cold Comfort Farm" are both larger than "Big Country II," yet paradoxically the 48-by-40-inch canvasses seem less monumental. That's due to the scale of the images as well as the backgrounds, which are shallower than those in the panoramic paintings with mountain vistas. In this way the larger paintings seem more intimate than the smaller ones.

  • If Debra Yates' abstractions recall any earlier modernist works, they are those of the American expressionists of the mid-20th century, although Yates' work has a restrained, sophisticated finish not usually cultivated by those earlier artists. Her "Triptych" is three square canvases with light gray backgrounds. Darker gray brush strokes add another background layer, in front of which are red ovals in the lower half of the canvases. Rectangular pieces of cloth, flat metal and black paint form motifs related to the red ovals. This is large, subtly beautiful composition. Several artists employ modernist techniques but work from widely different modernist traditions. Susan Rodgers had a recent entry in Sculpture Key West called "My Mondrian," which specifically recalls the severe abstract ...

  • Artists often traveled with such European explorers as Capt. James Cook. Evidence of their voyages fills old natural-history books and influenced the Victorian volumes illustrated with engravings of seashells, fish, and grasses arranged into striking compositions. Susan McDonnell first saw such 19th-century books while visiting a used-book store in England. "They have these beautiful illustrations -- sometimes whole scenes -- that are showing one part of the world what another part of the world looks like," she said. In a less dramatic way, she said, she is doing the same thing. McDonnell records the flora and fauna of her Los Angeles neighborhood -- an environment she calls "domesticated nature." • A group of eight 8-by-10-inch prints displays kaleidoscopic complexities, including bright colors and shallow backgrounds. In "Fisheye Mirror 1," the departure point appears to be a summer evenings scene, which has been quartered and flayed. The piece is built from a leafy tree, gray clouds heaped on a cerulean blue sky, and four sunsets glistening on dark water. Vertically vivisected landscapes look alien compared with horizontal vistas, as horizons are more familiar than lofty heights. Daniel's adept handling of color also focuses the work's abstract qualities. Her darks have either a blue or a greenish cast, and such fine variations compel viewers to seek connections. What's specifically Italian about the piece called "Italia" isn't obvious, but the 8-by- 10inch photo sports vibrant ...
