  • LOUISVILLE, Ky. - If a basketball team's offense can go colder than absolute zero, the University of Southern Indiana came close on Saturday. The second-seeded Screaming Eagles (24-7) sank only three baskets while committing nine turnovers in the final 10:39 of their first-round NCAA Division II Midwest Regional game against Kentucky Wesleyan. Meanwhile, the seventh-seeded Panthers (22-7) suddenly started making baskets, overcoming what had been a double- digit USI lead to post a 64-58 victory. It was the second straight year that USI has lost in the first round of the Midwest Regional, hosted by top-seeded Bellarmine University at Knights Hall.

  • Evans has held a long career in international security and arms control issues, as Australia's foreign minister during 19881996 and as the current president and chief executive officer of the International Crisis Group, a position he has held since 2000. Phase two is getting from there to absolute zero.\n For example nonstate terrorist actors taking a boat into New York harbor and bolting together some sort of gun-type device, not just a radiological or dirty bomb but a real nuclear bomb.15 If that figure is defensible, nobody in the universe would think a similar level of risk, a 10 per cent chance in 10 years , is acceptable in building, for example, a nuclear reactor power plant.

  • One way of dealing with this anti-Latino hate is for the federal government under an Obama administration to set a zero tolerance policy against harm to Latinos and the undocumented. This means a zero tolerance policy by local politicians to enact ordinances that target specific groups based on their immigration status. Immigration policy should be the realm of the federal government. This means a zero tolerance policy of saying all kinds of stereotypical things about Latinos or any ethnic or racial minority. Those politicians who do this should find themselves in a federal pen stripped of their careers and any chance to reenter politics. If we attack the politicians who scapegoat Latinos, then ordinary people will take note that they should not dare to commit hate crimes. Critics of th...

  • What's up with helium? * It would take 6,000 helium-filled balloons to lift a 75-pound child into the air. s It has incredibly low melting and boiling points. Helium exists as a gas except under extreme conditions. For example, it becomes a liquid just below 4.2 degrees Kelvin, close to absolute zero. * When an object is placed next to liquid helium, it extracts energy from the object, making it colder. * Is used widely as a coolant. * Is abundant in the universe but rare on Earth. • Seeing the structure of proteins in an effort to create drugs that fight cancer and cardiovascular disease is not a cheap endeavor, and the University of Missouri is using a new $2.1 million machine to create the molecular maps that pave the way. The 800-megahertz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, the only one in Missouri, is a very cool machine - 20 degrees above absolute zero, to be exact. That's the temperature necessary to keep its superconducting magnet free of radio wave distortion and able to create a magnetic field powerful enough to excite atoms.

  • A few hours after being the first person to receive the Committee for Elementary Science International's Science Advocate Award and a standing ovation from a thousand science teachers, Don Herbert was asked to pull a water-balloon into a bottle. Don Herbert's techniques and performances helped create the United States's first generation of homegrown rocket scientists just in time to respond to Sputnik. Mr. Wizard stood eggs on end, hammered nails with cryogenic bananas, and graphed shrinking gasses on their way to absolute zero long before any else did.
