On Thursday, the 113th House will fulfill its express constitutional duty to choose its speaker. The result may well be the re-election of Rep. John A. Boehner, R-Ohio. But events of the past week have cast some doubt on that.
The vote will be taken by the new House, which has 233 Republicans, 200 Democrats and two vacancies. If 17 Republicans vote for someone other than Boehner, and he falls short of an absolute majority of all the votes cast, the House will be thrown into turmoil -- no elected speaker along with the prospect of additional ballots and a whole lot of intrigue before the new speaker is chosen and sworn in.

ATHENS, Greece - Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou survived a confidence vote in parliament early Wednesday, winning a gamble on his government's survival and the danger of a devastating debt default.
Papandreou won more than the absolute majority of 151 votes he needed in the 300-member legislature to face down an internal party revolt and help him pass deeply disliked austerity measures that have provoked strikes, protests and a slump in his popularity.

HARTFORD -- State House Democrats were locked in an uncertain closed-door fight late Tuesday over whether Reps. James A. Amann of Milford or William R. Dyson of New Haven would become House speaker. A secret ballot gave Amann only 75 Democratic votes, one short of the absolute majority he needed to guarantee victory over Dyson in the leadership contest when the official vote is held in January.
That inconclusive result could plunge House Democrats and Republicans into a two-month lobbying war over the speakership and might leave deep and lasting legislative wounds.

The Electoral College is one of the most controversial and ridiculed parts of the Constitution. It is not just for the obvious reasons -- the "wrong winner" elections of 1876, 1888 and 2000. The college has also focused the nation's attention on a few swing states, allowing candidates to ignore a large percentage of the voters in their campaign.
Today, the three largest states get little attention, except as ATMs for campaign fundraising.

The victory for the Socialist Party of President Francois Hollande will fall short of giving him the votes needed to carry out constitutional changes that could be needed to resolve the euro crisis.
The Socialist Party of President Francois Hollande and its allies have won an absolute majority in runoff parliamentary elections, strengthening the hand of Mr. Hollande both at home and in Europe, where he is pressing for less austerity and more growth in the face of a deepening recession.
