A survey of employee opinions carried out by communications consultancy CHA highlights the power of frequent, clear and timely communication. Communicators have long understood how effective employee communication has the potential to encourage discretionary effort, reduce absenteeism and improve retention. The following are some of the clear guidelines of timely communication: 1. Leaders need to become better and more regular communicators themselves. 2. Respondents firmly favor face-to-face communication, which offers the chance to debate issues and build a sense of teamwork. 3. High-tech solutions should be used sparingly as they are most likely to be expensive and less likely to be useful. 4. Keep in regular but not constant contact.

Approximately 700,000 Oklahomans are without health insurance. This is more than 20 percent of our population. The nation as a whole has an uninsured population of 15 percent. As evidenced by studies on the health of our residents, this has exacted a price on the rest of Oklahoma. The cost of treatment is passed on by hospitals and insurance companies, where we all absorb part of the costs. The uninsured also tend to be less healthy as they delay getting medical care and have less access to preventive care. This increases the costs to others and to Oklahoma businesses in lost productivity and absenteeism. The problems created by those not having health insurance are generally agreed upon, but the suggested solutions are many and varied.
