The success of West Virginia's School Health Initiative was manifested by the increase in the number of student who passed the President's Physical Fitness Test from 17.7% in 1991 to 22.3% in 1996, less absenteeism in schools, and increase in the number of visits to wellness centers. The program's goal is to detect health problems early, teach health measures to children and their families and provide them access to health services.

Members of the Madison Property Owners Association don't think that local teachers are making the grade when it comes to attendance, but school officials are saying that the district actually has the lowest rate of teacher absenteeism.
The MPOA looked at state Department of Education data that shows the district has the highest rate of teacher absenteeism compared with their peer schools and other districts in the state, but school Superintendent David Klein said that when long-term absences are removed from that data, Madison has the lowest rate compared with peer schools.

Nearly 22 million school days are lost each year due to illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But a new study from researchers at Children's Hospital Boston, published in "Pediatrics," found that simple steps like disinfecting surfaces and using alcohol-based hand sanitizers helped reduce student absenteeism rates in elementary schools.

DIXFIELD -- Some clinics planned for schools in the Western Foothills School District have been rescheduled because H1N1 flu vaccine wasn't received in time, Superintendent Tom Ward told the board at Monday night's meeting.
He also said that absenteeism in one of the district's four elementary schools has risen to 15 percent, a number that requires a report to the state, while such rates are rising districtwide. He did not identify the school.

HODGDON - School administrators in Aroostook County are hoping the Thanksgiving break gave students time to ward off flulike symptoms that contributed to higher than average rates of absenteeism among students in the two weeks before the holiday.
Earlier last month, when schools across the state began reporting high rates of absenteeism among students, few Aroostook County schools were affected.

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin made news last weekend when he floated a proposal to start the state's buck-hunting season on Saturday instead of Monday.
Manchin said the change would keep widespread employee and student absenteeism from closing as many schools. Currently, schools close in 34 counties during buck season's opening two or three days.
