CHICAGO -- Rafi Zelikowsky skipped class on Tuesday to camp out in downtown Chicago and wait for Barack Obama, the man who captured the hearts of so many young voters.
We're feeding off the energy," said Zelikowsky, a 19-year-old Northwestern University student from Los Angeles who arrived at 7:30 a.m. EST to stand in a long line outside the park where supporters awaited Obama's victory address more than 15 hours later. Zelikowsky, who voted for Obama by absentee ballot in California, also spent her previous weekend canvassing for the Illinois senator in rural Iowa.

Although there is agreement that providing voting machines with easy access for the handicapped community is necessary, getting from here to there presents no such unanimity. The problem with HAVA, says [Michael Smith], is that "the legislation has gotten ahead of the technology." Marin, as well as other jurisdictions, could face lawsuits, from voters - and possibly from the feds. (The Justice Department has made noises about suing New York state if it fails to comply with HAVA. [Anne Layzer] says New York is much farther out on the...

It's pretty certain that the main reason Californians will vote next month in their earliest-ever primary election is that incumbent state legislators wanted to make sure they got Proposition 93 onto a ballot well before the March filing deadlines for the regular June primary for state offices.
But they could theoretically have picked a January Tuesday for the vote on that measure, which would allow more than half today's lawmakers to stay in office years longer than the current term limits law would allow. They could even have scheduled the vote for a different day of the week.
