Today is the deadline to request an absentee ballot for those who will be unable to make it to their polling station on Nov. 8.
Applications for the ballots can be obtained at county elections offices or online at www.votespa.com. County elections divisions must receive the applications by close of business today. Ballots will then be mailed to applicants.

Election directors say implementation of no fault absentee voting since the last presidential election is one of the contributing factors. Add to it continued uncertainty about who'll be at least one party's nominee on Ohio's March 4 primary, following last week's Super Tuesday presidential primaries. In Miami County, it might also have something to do with voters waiting in line in some polling places to use touch screen voting machines. Elections director Steve Quillen said he thinks Miami County will end up with 1,200 to 1,500 requests, even though he expects voting "to go pretty quickly" at the polls March 4. Voters who will be out of town during the upcoming general election have a little more than a week to apply for an absentee ballot.
Applications for absentee ballots must be submitted by 5 p.m. Nov. 1. The general election is Nov. 8. Voters who cannot go to the polls because of an illness or physical disability also are eligible for absentee ballots. Completed ballots must be returned by 5 p.m. Nov. 4.

The Broward County Supervisor of Elections Office would like to inform voters that over 75,000 absentee ballots will be going out in the mail on October 1st. Once the voter has received his or her ballot, we remind them to keep the following in mind:
* Each voter household will be receiving shortly a sample ballot. The sample ballot will help you prepare to vote in the General Election. * Absentee ballots must be in the possession of the Broward Supervisor of Elections by 7 p.m. on election night. Post marks are not accepted.

SEYMOUR -- The state has fined the town clerk $1,000 for failing to issue an absentee ballot to a disabled man who wanted to vote in a July 8 referendum. Faye Checkley of Birchwood Road filed a complaint against Town Clerk Esther Rozum on Sept. 20 after she was refused an absentee ballot for her husband, Carl Checkley, who has multiple sclerosis and is in a wheelchair.
Rozum said she will personally pay the fine.

DAYTON -- The Montgomery County Board of Elections on Tuesday fired a part-time election worker for writing on a voter's application for an absentee ballot, according to Betty Smith, deputy director.
Workers are not permitted to alter any documents sent to the board.
