* Bad timing. Whatever the real reason was for that mysterious recasting of the Caleb role on "Desperate Housewives," the timing of the switch was not great. In last Sunday's episode, when escapee Caleb was caught, police asked Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria) if this guy (played by new Caleb Nashawn Kearse) was the man who attacked her in her home. She said yes. Only thing is, her attacker was the old Caleb, played by the axed Page Kennedy, and, except for their skin color, the two actors do not resemble each other.
* R.I.P.: What would "Prison Break" do without Peter Stormare, whose Abruzzi character was apparently mortally wounded by wonderfully creepy fellow inmate T-Bag (Robert Knepper) in last Monday's episode? His big mistake was forgiving and sparing the life of T-Bag, who produce...

Shows worth tuning in this week:
THE ENGAGEMENT RING -In this sweet, if fantastical, tale, Patricia Heaton plays a woman named Sara, who's trying to patch up a 40-year-old feud between two Italian-American winemaking families in California. The animosity stems from a big misunderstanding. Sara's mother Alicia (Lainie Kazan) never received the engagement ring that her teenage love, Nick (played in the present by Tony Lo Bianco), mailed her from overseas when he was in the Army. (Unbeknownst to either, a quake rocked the post office, causing the package to get stuck behind something.) While attempting a reconciliation, Sara gets confused about her feelings for her practical fiance (David Hunt, Heaton's husband in real life) when she meets Nick's fiery and funny nephew Tony (Vincent Spano)...

Trailer-park newlyweds, Malibu stalker, Manhattan mystery man, Scranton paper pusher, rich California mama's boy, Alabama-born murderer/sexual predator - at first glance, these folks would never collide, much less appear together in the same sentence.
But there is a common denominator. They're all quirky television characters who are livening up prime time this season.

You can ask, beg or plead with writer-producer Nick Santora for details about what's ahead on "Prison Break," but the response is always the same. Polite and funny - but not about to divulge classified information.
I'd like nothing more than to run off at the mouth. I wish I could start a blog and print it. People would jump out of their skin with the twists and turns and bombs dropping," Santora says. "Huge, massive revelations with respect to some of our characters. People we never thought we'd see we'll see.

Shows worth tuning in this week:
ROCK This is a straight-out plug for a good show that needs some help in the ratings. Tina Fey's new comedy is not perfect, but it does have much to recommend it, starting with Alec Baldwin as network executive Jack Donaghy, the "new VP of development for NBC- GE-Universal-K-Mart." In this week's episode, Fey's Liz Lemon, head writer of "The Girlie Show," has to face her uneasy writing staff after Donaghy forces creative changes, including the hiring of an erratic movie star named Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan). The new arrival comes up with a plan to foster team spirit but alas, like Tracy, it turns out to be a little nutty. (8 p.m. Wednesday, NBC)
